Tuesday still is Election Day in Minnesota. The state’s largest city once again finds itself in the spotlight.
Issue: Racial & Criminal Justice
Principles supporting position:
- Equality
- Law and Justice
- Dignity
- Protect the vulnerable
Basis for federal government role in the issue:
The Constitution Preamble sets forth a federal duty to “establish Justice”; 5th Amendment to Constitution: “No person shall...be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law....”; 14th Amendment to Constitution: “...nor shall any State deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws”
Principle Based Position
- Fair judicial treatment of the accused and convicted, regardless of their race or economic class, is essential
- Capital punishment is ineffective, inconsistently imposed, and just plain wrong
- Reform, redemption, and public safety should be goals of the criminal justice system
