Basis for federal government role in the issue:
Principle Based Position
Social Security must be preserved by slightly raising the age at which we can start drawing full benefits in the future, further reducing the benefit to those who start drawing before full retirement age, and increasing the maximum taxable wage base
Current recipients and those close to retirement should not be affected
Reform is necessary for all government benefits programs
Benefits should not be provided in a way that hurts the recipients in the long run by perpetuating their dependence on the government
As things stand now, the Social Security trust fund will run out of cash in 2033 or ‘34, reducing everyone’s checks by 23 percent. Nevertheless, federal politicians are afraid to fix Social Security to prevent the future shortfall.
