Jesus and Debt

Jesus and Debt

Whether they are Christian or not, most people agree that a man named Jesus was born roughly 2025 years ago. (See biblical Christmas Story found in, e.g., Luke 2.) For the sake of illustrating a different point, let’s just assume that the Christ Child’s contemporaries instantly realized his eventual kingship and decided Jesus should receive a stipend of one million denarii (the local Roman currency) per day for his entire life. A million every 24 hours. That was a lot, as the common worker was paid one denarius per day.

Now, to further illustrate, let us also say — as I do — that Jesus, though crucified to death at age 30ish, rose again (see Easter Story in, e.g., Matthew 28) and has eternal life — as do his believers. Of equal importance, Jesus continues to live, sits at the right hand of God in heaven, forgives sins, and rules the world to this very moment. For purposes of my illustration, the living God also still would be getting his daily one million denarii.

How much money would Jesus have received by now, if you do the math? My calculator says 365 days per year times 2025 years times 1,000,000 denarius per day equals almost 740 billion denarii in lifetime pay through the present. That is less than one trillion. It is less than three-quarters of a trillion, in fact.

The national debt of the United States currently stands at almost $37 trillion. That is more than a lot. Assuming a dollar equals a denarius, our national debt is 50 times as much as Jesus has received in my admittedly quirky illustration. His entire lifetime pay so far would be only 2% of our national debt.

Folks, we have to do something about this. “Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors” (Matthew 6:12) is not going to work for the United States in this context. Instead, our federal leaders should seek to live out Romans 13:8: “Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another.”

I couldn’t agree more, Quentin. Debt enslaves individuals. Debt enslaves nations. This same Jesus came to set us free from those things that enslave us. We need to cast off that yoke of debt that enslaves our nation.

Preach Brother! First of all, loved your witness of faith which I share with you. Secondly, YES! I balance my checkbook every month – why can’t the government – pretty ridiculous. Where do we start? So overwhelming at this point that everyone has just checked out.

In continuing the theme of my responses to your blog posts, in order to reduce the national debt and control the same going forward, we must control government. The outgrowth of the giant government approach, which started a little bit way back with Woodrow Wilson, was institutionalized under FDR, and then became unrestrained from LBJ to Obama, is the problem. In order to fix this problem, which is on display in struggling blue cities all over the country and in our biggest struggling state, CA, we must all start by understanding that leftism, promoted mostly by Dems (with many republicans also contributing to this massive problem–Bush the younger being a great example), is not nice. Leftism and the liberalism promoted by the current Dem party (and the Media) is not virtuous, kind, empathetic, good or productive. We must all understand that giant government, including huge entitlement programs promoted by giant government, is destructive. Giant government and putting half the nation on the dole, is not nice or virtuous—it is the opposite. If we do not start by changing this false narrative, which we have all been force fed for generations, we will not tame the beast of government. Giant government leads to debt and dependency. Those, like the current crop of socialists/Dems, are utterly clueless–or worse–they are insidious. Government is the constituency of the Dems. Changing this false narrative will be very difficult–but it is essential. Government is essential–but we must keep a choke chain around it–always. Once we understand that government must be restrained, we will begin to reduce the debt. We can start–by everybody rejecting Vlad the Impaler/Newson from CA–who desperately wants to be our next prez–he is a dangerous, leftist, giant government power freak. Newsom has crushed his own state with his incompetency and leftism. Vlad–and those like him–are much more dangerous than Orange Man. Let’s do better. Good luck.
